Duderstadt 
vom 17.11. bis zum 19.11.2023

Es ist Freitagnachmittag, schnell noch eine letzte Email schreiben, Rechner zuklappen, Felix von der Schule abholen, zur Physio,… ein normaler Freitag also? Nein! Denn heute fahren wir das erste mal zum SLO-Treffen nach Duderstadt. Auch wenn ich durch die WhatsApp-Gruppe das Gefühl habe, zumindest einen Teil schon zu kennen, sind wir sehr gespannt!
Um 22 Uhr kommen wir endlich an - und werden herzlich empfangen. Leider haben wir verpasst, dass unsere internationalen Gäste der SLO Foundation sich und ihre Arbeit vorstellen: wie so oft ist in den USA alles größer - die Mitgliederzahl, die eingesammelten Spenden, aber auch die Zahl der Expert:innen, die sich mit SLO beschäftigen. Aber wir als SLO-Verein und unsere Kinder können nur davon profitieren und wir freuen uns, dass Gretchen und die anderen da sind - schon fleißig im Gespräch! Und auch wir bleiben noch etwas an der Bar…

Am Samstag starten wir das Treffen mit einem Vortrag von Markus Wilkens zur Sondenentwöhnung. Mit seinem Ansatz in einem Zusammenspiel von ambulanter und intensiver Therapie vor Ort, zugeschnitten auf die kleinen und großen Patient:innen, scheint er gute Erfolge zu erzielen. Leider wird die Therapie nicht von der Kasse übernommen… Aber immerhin können wir alle im Gespräch viele Fragen stellen und bekommen gute Impulse. Zum Abschluss des Vormittags erzählt uns Markie (SLO, Gretchens Sohn) aus den USA  noch über sich - auf Deutsch, was ziemlich beeindruckend ist. 
Vor dem Mittagessen - im strahlenden Sonnenschein - machen wir noch unser Gruppenfoto, alle bunt durcheinander gemischt. Am Nachmittag versuchen wir, wie die meisten, noch ein paar Sonnenstrahlen zu erhaschen, aber es ist doch schon ziemlich kalt und bald sind wir wieder zurück und in Gesprächen vertieft - wir mit den Großen, Felix im Spiel mit den Kleinen (und nicht so Kleinen). Der Abend klingt aus mit netten Gesprächen, alle bunt durcheinander gemischt, in der Tatico-Bar. 

Am Sonntagvormittag findet noch das Vereinstreffen statt, der letztes Jahr komplett neu gewählte Vorstand berichtet über das letzte Jahr und wird entlastet. Auch wird berichtet von den Treffen der Achse, dem internationalen SLO- und dem europäischen Metabern-Treffen, an dem einzelne dabei waren. Auch wird kurz über den Ort des Treffens geredet, da die Anreise aus Süddeutschland doch zum Teil arg weit ist. Vorschläge sind willkommen - die nächsten zwei Jahre treffen wir uns aber auf jeden Fall wieder in Duderstadt! Mit dieser Feststellung sind wir am Ende des Treffens und nach einem Mittagessen machen sich alle mit vielen Eindrücken auf den Weg nach Hause. So auch wir - zu Namen habe ich jetzt „echte“ Gesichter und wir haben viele Erfahrungen ausgetauscht, Gemeinsamkeiten verbinden eben - und Felix erzählt noch lang von Paul, Theo und Moritz und fragt, ob sie uns besuchen kommen können…

It’s Friday afternoon, finishing up a last email, off to pick up Felix from school, off to PT, … just a regular Friday? No! Today, for the first time, we are off to the annual SLO meeting in Duderstadt. Even though with the WhatsApp group I feel I know at least a few already, I am beyond excited! It’s 10pm when we finally arrive and are heartily welcomed. Unfortunately we missed our guests from the international SLO foundation introducing themselves and their work: as often, in the US everything is bigger - more members, more donations, more SLO experts. But we as German SLO association and our children can only benefit from the connection and we’re happy to have Gretchen and the others - already well in conversation - and also we stay a bit longer at the bar to talk…

Saturday we start the meeting with a talk by Markus Wilkens on tube weaning. His approach with a mix off outpatient and inpatient therapy, tailored to the younger and older patients seems to yield good results. Unfortunately the is costly approach is not covered by the German sick funds… Yet, in conversation, we can ask a lot of questions and receive input and ideas. To finish the morning, Markie (SLO, Gretchen‘s son) from the US tells his story - in German, pretty impressive. 
In beautiful sunshine we take our group picture and then have lunch before we venture out individually for the afternoon. Since it’s rather cold we actually head back soon and join the many conversations - us with the adults and Felix with the other kids. The night ends in the Tatico bar with lots of talk and laughter.

Sunday morning we have our annual meeting of the association, the board of directors recaps the last year and we hear about the meetings with Achse, the international SLO meeting, and the Metabern meeting some of us participated in. Also, we discuss the location of the annual meeting as for some it’s a rather long travel. Suggestions are highly welcome, yet for the next two years we will meet again in Duderstadt. With this we close the meeting, and are all off to return home - with lots of impressions and information.  This is also true for us - I now have faces to put to names and we gained a lot in exchanging. Indeed similarities unite - and also Felix continues to talk about Paul, Theo and Moritz and asks if they can come visit…
